50 Ways of Saying Fabulous (2005)

New Zealand - a film by Stewart Main, Written by Rachael Fleury.

50 Ways of Saying Fabulous

"It was a world of adventure and a time of innocence, when friendships were forever and growing up would change everything." Set in New Zealand in the summer of 1975, 50 Ways of Saying Fabulous is the story of 12 year-old Billy, who is about to discover that growing up is a lot more confusing than he could have ever imagined. He is a farmer's only son who is out of step with the other boys at his school. He feels they only want to fight and play rugby and while he tries to be the same, he feels he was never cut out to be a farmer or a rugby player. Instead, he prefers to dream about an imaginary life in outer space. In this world, a turnip paddock becomes a lunar landscape and a cow's tail a head of beautiful blonde hair which transforms him into "Lana" the heroine of his favorite TV show. With the arrival of Roy, the class freak, and Jamie the sexy young farm laborer Billy's world is changed forever. As he learns about his sexuality, everything he knows is called into question, including his lifelong loyalty to his best friend, tomboy Louise, whose world is changing alongside his. Set in New Zealand's Central Otago landscape. 2006 Won Special Jury Award at the Torino International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival.

Download Press Kit Here...

ANNIE & MARY: Reflections on the Railroad celebrates the golden era of steam engines by exploring various sentiments and perceptions held in relation to the railroad. ANNIE & MARY was filmed in Humboldt County, California and at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, and includes 1940's archival film footage of steam engines in the redwoods. This documentary features interviews with museum operators, engineers, artists, historians, and model train enthusiasts. In Annie & Mary you meet - or rather hear the voices of - several of the folks who are members of what has now become the Timber Heritage Association. They've come a long way in the last six years of turning their dream of having a museum that would, amongst other aspects, preserve and run the historic steam trains of the area. It seems to all be happening for them now, and what with Obama and global warming, I'm wondering if we may see a re-birth of train travel in the near future…. Black Sheep (2007)

Dark Humor Horror - New Zealand Writer, Director Jonathan King

Peter Jackson fans rejoice because there's a new hero in town, and his name is Jonathan King! This past week at the AFM in CA I had the pleasure of seeing BLACK SHEEP, his King's comedy horror film from New Zealand and was shocked by how much fun it was. SHEEP is the perfect compliment to Billy O'Brien's ISOLATION as it's the complete opposite film. The film is fun, energetic, hilarious and extremely entertaining… the only things they have in common are the zombie animals and loads of gore. In the film an experiment in genetic engineering turns harmless sheep into blood-thirsty killers that terrorize a rural town in New Zealand. While watching the film I was taken back to a time when Peter Jackson's DEAD ALIVE and BAD TASTE used to grace my TV screen hundreds of times a year. Much like a Jackson movie SHEEP never takes itself seriously and is completely self-aware. The jokes come like a one-two punch from Mike Tyson and are wonderfully integrated into the story. There are tons of "wink wink" moments, which will have horror fans high-fiving each other in the middle of the theater. One thing that I thought was quite odd was that a lot of the movie seemed to play as a homage to JURASSIC PARK. One character's name is "Grant", the monsters stem from a tube of genetically mutated sheep that are explained exactly like the dinosaurs in JP- there's even a scene were hundreds of sheep come hurdling over the hillside just like the cues in JP. I love the character development in the screenplay, as each character is 100% identifiable to the full extent. The bad brother is extremely evil, the good brother is extremely heroic and so on. The story kick starts right away and never pulls back; King makes sure to deliver on all of the goods that were written and ends the film on such a ridiculous note that it's just an exclamation point before the credits roll. But it's not all about laughs; there is so much blood in the movie that the gore hounds are going to piss themselves. We get heads being blown off by shotguns, sheep being blown apart, people eaten alive, mutated sheep being tested on, a penis being bitten off and a pit of discarded sheep guts- seriously, what more could you want?! And what make the FX work so well was that they were nearly all practical effects done by the great WETA (King Kong, Lord of the Rings). They used puppets and robots, and splash so much fake blood on the screen it's f-cking unbelievable. One last thing that really ensured that we would have a fun-filled ridiculous out-of-control blood-soaked ride (nice sentence huh?) was that they even had the humans get bit by the sheep and transform into Weresheep (only there's no going back). There are no rules set in the film and there's nothing to take seriously. The goal is to have you sit back, relax and have one hell of a good time. Mission accomplished. The theaters screamed, cheered, claps, laughed and gasped at all the right moments- Jonathan King just might become our new Peter Jackson, and I'm all for it.

Jim McVicker a way of Seeing (2008)

A Humboldt County filmed documentary by Norwegian filmmaker Petter Granrud

Jim McVicker

In the summer os 2008 , the Norwegian filmmaker Petter Granrud decided to make a documentary about a true artist. Granrud had heard from an American Friend about Jim McVicker, a paineter who lives and works in another Northern place, the wild and wooly landscape of California's Lost Coast. This is the Pacific Coast of Humboldt County., just south of the Oregon border - a largely roadless sparsely populated zone of giant trees and salty mine towns. The film is Granrud's esploration of Jim McVicker's World, and a tribute to his work. We follow the painter as he works in the places he loves: the meadows, the forests, harbors, the little weatherbeaten towns, and raggedsea-cliffs of Humboldt County. The scenery is entrancing, and watching this painter as he drinks it in, and then translates it in to his own artistic lanuage, is a joy. Granrund then goes further, and strives for a deeper understanding of the bond between the remarkable artist andhis astonishingnative grrou Running time: 30 minutes

Michael King, A Moment in Time (2007)

Michael King - Subject, Vanya Shaw - Interviewer, Clare O'Leary - Director, Glenis Giles - Producer, Simon Reece - Editor, Rewa Harre - Camera, Kevin Barton - Sound, & Dianne Civil - Sound.

A Moment in Time is an armchair interview with historian Michael King OBE filmed in 1991. King discusses his early influences, motivation, and distinctive publications. King died in a car accident with his wife Maria Jungowska in 2004, and his reflections in A Moment in Time are testament to the tragedy of that loss: "We've got to be able to trace our own footsteps and listen to our own voices or we'll cease to be New Zealanders, or being New Zealanders will cease to have any meaning."

Once Were Warriors (1994)

A New Zealand based drama, Directed by Lee Tamahori, Screenplay by Riwia Brown.

Once Were Warriors

Her only chance for the future is to embrace the power of her past. A family in crisis, a life in chaos... Nothing is more powerful than a mother's love. Set in urban Auckland (New Zealand) this movie tells the story of the Heke family. Jake Heke is a violent man who beats his wife frequently when drunk, and yet obviously loves both her and his family. The movie follows a period of several weeks in the family's life showing Jake's frequent outburst of violence and the effect that this has on his family. The youngest son is in trouble with the police and may be put into a foster home while the elder son is about to join a street gang. Jake's daughter has her own serious problems which are a key element in the plot. Written by Chris Maslin {maslinc@cad.canterbury.ac.nz} With her clenched jaw, her world-weary face and a pair of eyes that say ``I've seen it all,'' Rena Owen seems born to play Beth, the battered, ultimately heroic Maori wife in ``Once Were Warriors,'' a gut-grabber from New Zealand (now available on home video) that stays with you for days.

Set on the fringes of Auckland, where low-income Maoris survive among barbed wire, noisy traffic, graffiti and limited options, ``Once Were Warriors'' is primarily a tale of domestic violence and child sexual abuse. It's the story of Beth; her husband, Jake (Temuera Morrison), a bellicose, sexually explosive brute who beats her when he drinks; and the five children she tries to save from him. In New Zealand, ``Warriors'' broke the box-office record set by ``Jurassic Park'' and has had such wide-reaching influence that women's shelters and men-against- violence groups have multiplied to meet the demands of ``Warriors''- induced awareness.

One More Line (2008)

A Humboldt County film by Carrie Grant and John Howarth running time: 89 minutes.

Arts Alive!, which takes place Saturday, Oct. 3, a special opening featuring the drawings of Ferndale's Jack Mays.

The exhibit runs in honor of One More Line, a documentary about Mays and his work. Director Carrie Grant describes it thus:

"Jack Mays sits on Main Street for 15 years with his white plastic chair and drawing board. Sometimes, he sits for two years in one spot, seven days a week, 12 hours a day, drawing every detail ... He works constantly, producing a unique interpretation of small-town life, creating a body of over 400 drawings. "Diagnosed with inoperable cancer, Jack is given three months to live. Townspeople organize a living wake, and three years later he has outlived his death sentence ... "The film is a journal of a small town through the eyes of one man who had the patience and discipline to sit still for more than a decade, drawing one line at a time, as the life stories of a town emerge on paper. But the heart of the film is about finding one's place within a community, and maintaining the sense of belonging to that community."

One More Line premieres Friday, Oct. 23, at the Morris Graves Museum of Art. The exhibit of Jack Mays' drawings is on display in the Tom Knight Gallery through Nov. 8. Screening at the Ferndale Rep. WildRivers 101 Film Festival opening night special event, 7 pm

Reefer Madness (1936)

A cult classic Directed by Louis J. Gasnier Writing: Lawrence Meade (story) Arthur Hoerl (screenplay) running time:68 min Budget: $100,000.

Rivers of a Lost Coast

Reefer Madness (aka Tell Your Children) is a 1936 American exploitation film revolving around the tragic events that ensue when high school students are lured by pushers to try "marihuana": a hit and run accident, manslaughter, suicide, rape, and descent into madness all ensue. The film was directed by Louis Gasnier and starred a cast composed of mostly unknown bit actors. It was originally financed by a church group and made under the title Tell Your Children.

The film was intended to be shown to parents as a morality tale attempting to teach them about the dangers of cannabis use. However, soon after the film was shot, it was purchased by producer Dwain Esper, who re-cut the film for distribution on the exploitation film circuit. The film did not gain an audience until it was rediscovered in the 1970s and gained new life as a piece of unintentional comedy among cannabis smokers. Today, it is in the public domain in the United States and is considered a cult film. It inspired a musical satire, which premiered off-Broadway in 2001, and a Showtime film, Reefer Madness, based on the musical.Alive! 9 PM

Rivers of a Lost Coast (2009)

Director - Justin Coupe. Writers - Justin Coupe (written by), Palmer Taylor (written by).

Rivers of a Lost Coast

At the turn of the 20th Century, a handful of pioneers carried their fly rods into California’s remote north coast and gave birth to a culture that would revolutionize their sport. For a select few, steelhead fly fishing became an obsessive pursuit without compromise. Leading the pack was the mythical, Bill Schaadt, an off-kilter angler famous for his ruthless pursuit to be ‘in the fish’. The new endeavor was ruled by a demanding, unspoken code, which made 'breaking in' almost as difficult as 'breaking out'. By the early 1980s, the Golden State’s coastal fisheries found themselves caught in a spiraling decline. As California searched for its disappearing salmon and steelhead, these men foraged for their souls.

REDWOOD NATIONAL PARK: Preserving Ancient Forests (2009)

By KEET's cinematographer/editor Sam Green and Claire Reynolds.

REDWOOD NATIONAL PARK: Preserving Ancient Forests      REDWOOD NATIONAL PARK: Preserving Ancient Forests

Redwood National and State Parks is home to the tallest living things on earth - coast redwoods. Redwood National Park preserved nearly half the Earth's remaining old growth redwoods (in the general age range of 700 to 2,000 years old.) In addition to redwood forest, the park also comprises miles of pristine coastline, praires, creeks and valleys.

Although ninety percent of California's old growth redwoods had been harvested, the establishment of Redwood National Park in 1968, and the expansion in 1978 were controversial events in our local history.

The program features interviews with some local heroes who fought to save the redwoods such as Lucille Vinyard and Dave Van De Mark who discuss their efforts to convince legislators that the ancient redwoods needed to be saved and that the land surrounding old growth groves needed to be protected. We also speak with Martin Litton, who as editor of Sunset Magazine in the 60's and 70's participated in the preservation effort.

In addition to park historians, KEET talks with Yurok tribal members about their relationship to the land which is as old as the trees themselves.

The program also focuses on park management and the restoration of timberlands.

With a 400-year plan, Redwood National Park currently has massive watershed rehabilitation efforts underway to remove logging roads and creek passages to protect the old growth groves that exist today and those of the future.

With our production, KEET-TV hopes to inspire stewardship of this local and national treasure, UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve.

Target Practice (2008)

An Action, Written and Directed by Richmond Riedel. Big Screen Entertainment Group.

Target Practice

"Target Practice" is an intelligent but raw, visceral, extremely tense outdoor thriller with an emphasis on character as much as action. The story centers on 5 blue-collar friends on a weekend fishing trip - and the hell that's unleashed upon them when they almost run into a car that's been abandoned in the middle of an isolated mountain road. Stopping to see if anyone needs their help, they inadvertently stumble into the middle of an undercover operation involving a CIA agent and a hidden training camp for homegrown terrorists (molded after real-life, recent discoveries in both the U.S. and Canada). Suddenly, these 5 regular, everyday guys find themselves way out of their league, fighting a bloody battle against a cunning, well-trained, brutal enemy that knows the rugged terrain like the back of its hand. A battle that quickly spirals into a full-scale mini-war for which they are completely unprepared - a war that not only pits them against their murderous foe but against the elements and against their own simmering resentments, prejudices, and conflicting loyalties as well.
